8 Purple Hair Care Tips

Mar 11, 2016

Purple is one of the craziest and greatest hair colors ever existed. Not every girl dares to rock this hair color, but those who step out of the box and dye hair either dark or medium purple can be proud of themselves. The question is how to care for purple hair so that the color stays vibrant as long as possible? The answer is to follow eight simple purple hair care rules mentioned below.

1 Use a sulfate-free shampoo

Today more than 90% of all marketed shampoos contain sulfates so finding the one that is sulfate-free is not an easy task. However, you need this shampoo to keep your tresses healthy and the color vibrant.

Shampoos that contain sulfates not only fade the hair dye, they can also cause dry hair problems, scalp irritation, hair loss and split ends. Clarifying and dandruff shampoos are not good options for purple hair too.

2 Create a purple conditioner

If you can find a purple hair conditioner, then you are lucky. Those of you who cannot do it have to make their own one for keeping their purple hair bright for longer. The trick is adding a bit of the hair dye to your conditioner. Just a little bit, no more. You will notice the difference.

3 Be extra careful with the ends

Everything you need to wash is your scalp, so focus on it. Do not apply shampoo to your ends, only a purple conditioner and do not leave it for longer than a minute. Avoid rubbing too hard and do not towel dry the ends. Just wrap your hair in a towel and wait for a few minutes.

4 Avoid hot water

I am definitely not telling you to wash your hair with ice cold water. But hot water is one of the biggest enemies for your purple hair. 2 hot water rinses will be enough to spoil your bright hair color. If cold water is not your thing, opt for lukewarm water, even if you have an oily scalp.

5 Wash your hair twice a week

Whether you have natural hair or purple hair, you need to wash it no more than twice a week. This is a rule of thumb. Daily washing dries out your hair and strips the color from your hair. If you have a very oily hair, consider using dry shampoo when you need that quick fix.

6 Say no to hot oil treatments

Natural hot oil treatments are good for natural hair. Your purple hair does not need it. Some deep repair mask or your favorite hair mask is enough to keep your locks healthy and shiny. If hot oil treatment is a part of your beauty routine that you cannot say no to, then make sure you do not hot oil treat your hair right after dyeing and within at least two weeks of a new color process.

7 Use heat protection sprays

Before you use a hair dryer, curling iron or flat iron, make sure you apply a heat protection spray to your hair. Look for the one with less harsh ingredients, or use an all-natural heat protectant like argan oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil or refined avocado oil.

8 Wear a swimming cap

Summer is just around the corner, which means swimming is unavoidable. Protect your hair from chlorine by wearing a swimming cap. If you are looking to spend most of your summertime on the beach, invest in a good sun hat. It will help to keep your purple hair vibrant for weeks.

Now, I know it sounds a bit complicated, but purple hair needs extra care. Purple hair is all over Instagram and I think it is a luxury color that is worth any kind of effort. Follow the tips mentioned above and enjoy your bright purple hair for longer. Are you brave enough to color your hair purple? What is your shade?
