6 Essential Bedtime Skincare Tips to Prevent Acne

Oct 31, 2022

When you come home from a college party or after a long, hard day at work, and look at yourself in the mirror, the only thing you can say, “Sorry, my sweet face, I’ll take care of you in the morning.” Then, you wake up and see those huge breakouts all over your face. And now the only thing you say, “OMG, what to do?” If it sounds familiar to you, welcome to the club, girls. It’s never too late to break this habit and get into a new one.

As someone who suffers from acne on a regular basis, I pay a lot closer attention to making sure my skin is super clean when I’m ready to answer the call of my bed. Bedtime skincare routine is even more important than the morning one. The thing is, skin cells regenerate a bit faster at night than during the day. However, when you don’t take care of your skin before sleep, the dirt and oils prevent the skin cells from regenerating, causing breaks out, premature aging and skin damage. Regardless of how stressed, depressed, tired and exhausted you are, make sure you follow these essential bedtime skincare tips each day. Not only will you prevent acne, you will combat wrinkles as well.

1 Incorporate greens into your dinner

If you want to wake up with a clear skin, add some greens to your meal or have a glass of a green smoothie late in the evening to detoxify your body. Too many toxins inside your body can cause breakouts. Greens have fantastic cleansing abilities, helping your skin stay radiant and perfect all day long. My personal choice is a green smoothie, but a spinach salad can be a great option too.

2 Cleanse your skin properly

I’m not talking about removing your make-up only – I hope you already know the importance of this beauty ritual. No matter how tired you are today, the first thing you should do before going to bed is to cleanse your skin properly. Take off your makeup and wash your face, using a gentle foam cleanser or an oil-based cleanser (depending on your skin type). When you cleanse your skin properly, you remove all the junk on your skin that can cause acne overnight.

If your skin is too oily, make sure you use gentle exfoliator twice a week to get rid of the dirt and dead skin cells. Dead skin cells contribute to breakouts when they mix with dirt and skin oils, which is why regular exfoliation is highly important.

3 Never skip your moisturizer

Even if you stay hydrated throughout the day, your skin still needs some hydration. Applying eco-friendly moisturizer before bedtime is the key to a healthy, glowing and clear skin in the morning. However, make sure you cleanse your skin properly first. It is useless to apply the moisturizer to the dirty skin.

4 Let your phone sleep at night

Now that you cleanse your body from the inside and your skin from the outside, stay away from your phone. Phones collect tons of germs and bacteria throughout the day. Even if you keep your phone clean, there’s always at least one germ that can cause a breakout. Keep your phone away from your bed at night if you want to wake up feeling happy instead of worrying about how to get rid of that zit.

5 Check your clock

Numerous researches show a lack of sleep can lead to severe acne. Beauty sleep is essential for your skin. You can get 8 hours of sleep, but still wake up feeling tired and with face full of breakouts. It’s probably because you go to bed at 1 a.m. or later. Go to bed before 11 p.m. to get enough of beauty sleep and prevent acne. It’s okay to skip your beauty sleep now and then but don’t make it a habit.

6 Opt for silk pillowcases

Not only do silk pillowcases help prevent acne, but they also help prevent wrinkles and facial lines as well. Just try to switch your pillowcase as often as possible – if you suffer from severe acne, switch it out each day. No matter how clean your face is, your pillowcase is always a number two source of dirt, germs, and bacteria. It takes only a minute to switch your pillowcase out so don’t be lazy. Your face will thank you in the morning.

When it comes to your bedtime skincare routine, your laziness is the only reason you don’t or can’t cleanse your skin. Many women wonder why they suffer from breakouts when they remove and then apply makeup in the morning, eat healthy and stay hydrated throughout the day. The answer is obvious. Pay close attention to your bedtime skincare routine and enjoy a healthy skin every morning. What are your bedtime beauty secrets?
