5 Old-Fashioned Ideas We Should Bring Back
I have found myself to be extremely frustrated at how people behave and treat others today. I am tired of the “me, me, me” mentality. I am weary of seeing the outbursts of anger when someone drives too slow to stay behind in traffic. It is time to bring about a new hope for society using old-fashioned ideas.
1 The golden rule
Where has this rule gone? Treat others how you would like to be treated has disappeared from our lifestyles. We do not care about how others will treat us because we are entitled to treat people any way we want. Or so we seem to think.
I completely and emphatically disagree! Other people in society influence my life just as I do theirs. So why would I want to treat them with anything other than the utmost respect and kindness? I would want them to treat me that way. Let’s bring this golden rule back to the way we live.
2 Manners
Manners are another way to treat others with kindness and respect. It is really okay to say thank you when someone holds the door open for you or lets you go ahead of them in the checkout line. Telling a waitress please and thank you is allowed and appreciated. We all want to be treated with kindness and respect, so use your manners, always.

3 Respect elders
It kills me when I see the younger generation give little to no respect to their elders. Dictionary.com defines the word “elder” as “an influential member of a tribe or community, often a chief or ruler; a superior.” I have always thought of an elder as someone who is wise because of age and experience. Elders deserve respect. They do not deserve to be ignored or mistreated.
4 Family time
We all fall guilty of being overly busy. Our children are involved in after-school activities, we have meetings and commitments, etc. Time spent at a dinner table discussing important events of the day is not often seen. Having a “family night” is more like everyone being in one place at one time for a period. There is no connection with each other, no communication. This is the downfall of the American family. We must resurrect this idea.
5 Courtesy
Common courtesy is a rare jewel today. This is observed in traffic with all the road rage that goes on. People are killing people because of a lack of courtesy and respect for human life. Courtesy is putting other people’s needs before our own. It is once again treating people with kindness and respect. What would it hurt to put others above ourselves?

I believe that our society has lost these “old-fashioned” ideas and have lost hope. If we do not bring back the golden rule, manners, respect, family time, and courtesy, where are we headed? I am afraid it is down a path of self-destruction. Be one of the few people who treat others the way you want to be treated. Think of others first, and maybe, we will begin to see a new hope arise.
