3 Halloween Memories You Have Only if You Are an Introvert

Oct 7, 2016

As a kid, I was horribly insecure and shy. But when it came to Halloween, I was a whole different person. Maybe you can relate. If you are an introvert and were shy as a kid, you might have had these Halloween memories similar to mine. Extroverts will not understand our trick or treating struggles.

1 The bobbing for apples memory

I believe I was in second grade at the time when I was invited to a classmate’s Halloween party. I was so excited because I desperately wanted to fit in the crowd. I do not remember much about the party, but I do remember when it was time to bob for apples. What if I failed? Would they laugh? What if I couldn’t get an apple?

I would probably die from embarrassment. My turn came, and I had high hopes of being the only one who could actually catch that apple bobbing around in the bucket. Then everyone would think I was cool. I would not need to hide behind my mask of shyness and insecurity anymore.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and slowly inched toward one of the apples. I could feel it on my lips, and I knew it was now or never. Unfortunately, that time was going to remain never. Trick or treat? That one was a trick.

2 Trick-or-treating memory

Trick-or-treating was always a time of uncertainty for me. I never knew if someone would jump out behind some place to scare the living daylights out of me or not. I hated that stupid saying, “trick-or-treat” and then begging for the treats. Thankfully, my younger sister was my “go to,” and when I didn’t want to say it, she would. Trick or Treat? Hmmm. Treat for me, I guess.

3 The costume contest memory

Now as I mentioned before, I loved being able to be someone else on Halloween. I could be an extrovert. I remember a time just out of high school when my place of work decided to have a costume contest. Prizes were involved, and I was going to be able to put the extrovert mask on and be someone I wasn’t.

How about Dolly Parton? Now, if you are too young to know who she is, you might need to do a google search to see what I’m talking about. Let’s just say a wig and two balloons were all I needed. Dolly is famous for her singing and her chest size. Why I chose her, I do not know.

I guess because she was so opposite of me. I was the popular sales clerk with the men that night, something I didn’t feel real comfortable with at all. But, needless to say, I won the contest. I won a trip for two for a weekend in a resort! Trick or treat? Treat, definitely.
